These festschriften were written for two of the most distinguished elder statesmen of the academic field of international relations, Alexander George and Stanley Hoffmann. Both scholars over the years have distinguished themselves by the extraordinary range of their interests and their humanistic approach to the study of politics, characteristics that are reflected in these books. The George volume spans topics from psychological factors in national leadership and interest-group politics to deterrence and the use of force, while the Hoffmann volume includes essays on ethics, French politics and American foreign policy. The latter also includes two interesting biographical essays by Hoffmann himself.
