Modern European Socialism

By Lawrence Wilde

Dartmouth Publishing Company, 1994, 221 pp.

This is a broad, brief survey of European socialism in the European Community post-1945 era, including accounts of Soviet communism, regarded by many as a perversion of socialism. An English academic depicts "new social movements" as well, principally feminism and the Greens in different guises. A useful introduction, especially to the vast literature on the range of subjects, acknowledging socialist failures and defeats but not ruling out a socialist revival even under the new social conditions, provided capitalism fails "to deliver security and prosperity" in the new world system.
