As Israeli and PLO negotiators were inching toward agreement in Norway last year, another group of Israeli and Palestinian academics, joined by Jordanians and Americans, were jointly considering how the economic transition to peace between Israel and the Palestinians could best be carried out. They agreed on the importance of giving the Palestinians economic sovereignty, but also supported the concepts of a free market and free trade as the best guarantee that a Palestinian economy would prosper and provide jobs. Along with a study by the World Bank, this should be a key reference document as the Palestinians begin to take control of their future after so many years of Israeli occupation. The mere fact that Israelis and Palestinians have jointly tackled these difficult issues is a promising sign for the future.
