Nationalism, Ethnicity, and Identity: Cross-National and Comparative Perspectives
Nationalism, Ethnicity, and Identity: Cross-National and Comparative Perspectives
Edited by Russell F. Farnen
Transaction Publishers, 1994, 538 pp.

This volume brings together a rather diverse set of chapters on ethnicity and nationalism, with topics ranging from cross-national comparisons of national stereotypes to individual country studies of ethnic identity in Germany, Poland, Hungary, Ukraine, Turkey, and elsewhere. Many individual chapters contain interesting empirical data from value surveys on ethnicity. The editor strongly favors multicultural education as a solution to the problem of ethnic diversity; he might do well to consult the Spinner volume noted above concerning the normative limits of this kind of approach in a liberal society.
