Between States: Interim Governments and Democratic Institutions
Between States: Interim Governments and Democratic Institutions
By Yossi Shain and Juan J. Linz
Cambridge University Press, 1995, 326 pp

This volume examines transitional regimes as a factor in democratization. In the manner of previous texts of his, Linz provides a useful conceptual framework and a meticulous taxonomy of transitional regime types. Case studies range from revolutionary transitions in Iran and Portugal to negotiated transitions in Spain and South Africa. The final chapter points out the limits of theories that emphasize international structure over regime type; transitional regimes bring radically different foreign policies.
