The Peru Reader: History, Culture, Politics
The Peru Reader: History, Culture, Politics
Edited by Orin Starn, Carlos Ivan Degregori, and Robin Kirk
Duke University Press, 1995, 531 pp.

Containing historical texts dealing with Peru's rich past, some of which are difficult to obtain elsewhere, the introductory readings chosen by the editors provide excellent accounts of the ancient civilizations of the Andes, cover the conquest and colonial periods as well as republican Peru, and conclude with an extensive discussion of contemporary problems, from the neoliberal economic policies of the Fujimori administration to the present role of culture and minorities in Peruvian society. This fine initiative raises hopes for volumes on other Latin American countries for which historical material of this quality is not easily available to the general reader.
