This is a tragic tale, told by a talent, full of sound and fury, and signifying quite a lot. In addition to providing a skillful and engaging account of the long escalation, though in mercifully short compass, Hunt draws attention to the right lessons. Nations renovate themselves as much by reflection on their mistakes as on their successes, so it is important to be reminded of "inescapable human limits, the international misunderstanding and miscalculation that inexorably flow from those limits, and the material and spiritual destruction that human beings can as a consequence visit upon one another."
