Founded in 1996, NIMA brought together a number of elements in the defense and intelligence establishments -- most notably, the Defense Mapping Agency and the National Photographic Interpretation Center, which did pioneering work during the Cold War. Imagery is now largely digital, and the borders between classified and open sources have blurred. This attractive and accessible site provides a vast source of data covering the globe to those who have the right software and modest technical expertise.
