The Paraguayan War, Vol. 1: Causes and Early Conduct
By Thomas L. Whigham
University of Nebraska Press, 2002, 512 pp

In this attractively produced first installment of a promised two-volume set on the Paraguayan War, Whigham provides a nice complement to Centeno's work, laying out the war's origins and the course of the early military clashes. This book is one of the few reliable accounts available in English of the most intensive interstate war ever fought in Latin America and leading to the loss of hundreds of thousands of lives. Whigham's fast-paced and engrossing narrative should appeal to those military history buffs who do not usually see Latin America on their horizons.
